Monitoring Instruments

PAMS (photochemical assessment monitoring stations) models for the United States were introduced and Perkin Elmer’s automatic volatile organic compound analysis system is used as the basic monitoring facility for the photochemical stations. The meter samples the air every hour and performs tests on it. VOCs in the atmosphere are condensed inside electronic cooling and condensing wells that are covered in suitable absorbents. It is capable of cooling and condensing fixed quantities of C2-C11 VOCs. Next, the well quickly heats the gas and brings out the VOC, and a gas-phase analysis system is used for substance separation. Finally, a flame ionization detector is used for detection. The figure below shows analysis results for Perkin Elmer’s automatic volatile organic compound analysis system. The 54 types of O3 precursors targeted by the PAMS are listed in the table below. They provide sufficient indicators inside flame ionization detectors for as little as a few ppt(v/v) to several ppb(v/v) of molecules can be detected. This is more than sufficient to detect VOC concentrations in typical cities and counties.
